Project Description
CN railway is using 2 remote avalanche control (RAC) systems on its Northeast section to protect the railway from avalanches. Maintenance must be completed on the RAC system yearly.
Project Requirements
Have 2 avalanche technicians performing maintenance on the RAC system. All work must comply with the WorkSafeBC Part 11 – Fall Protection, WorkSafeBC Part 32 – Evacuation and Rescue, and Federal Occupational Health & Safety Regulations for Tower Rescue.
Scope of Work
Alpine Solutions is using a helicopter for remote access to the tower. Install a temporary fall protection system, follow tower climbing procedures, and have a tower rescue system in place.
Perform maintenance as per the manufacturer’s recommendation.
Challenges
- Remote location.
- High-hazard work location with the possibility of a fall from height.
- Complex tower rescue in the event of an emergency.
- Limited resources.

- Perform a strong risk assessment before work.
- Develop a tailored access and tower rescue system
- Fall arrest system and tower rescue system overview by an IRATA Level 3 rope access technician.
