Risk Assessment

Industry Leading Avalanche Risk Assessment

Any organization planning to conduct work in mountain environments needs an avalanche risk assessment. At a basic level, avalanche mapping and hazard and consequence is analyzed. Once risks have been identified, mitigation options can be considered.

Avalanche risk is assessed at two different stages of a project: the planning stage and operational stage. The planning-stage avalanche risk assessment focuses on extreme avalanche events (e.g., 100-year return periods) and informs worker safety planning as well as infrastructure and facility layout. Operational-stage avalanche risk assessments focus on short-term (e.g., daily) avalanche hazard and informs avalanche forecasting and risk control measures.
