Coastal Gaslink Pipeline, Site Rescue Services

CGL Project

Houston to Icy Pass, BC

Project Requirements

The project required Alpine Solutions to provide a highly skilled and versatile rescue team for any hazardous activities, both summer and winter. The rescue team was required to be highly versatile and competent. Specific requirements included technical rope rescue, confined space rescue, first aid, helicopter extrication, swift-water rescue, jaws-of-life extraction for vehicle crush accidents, and more.

Project Description

The Coastal GasLink Pipeline is a 670 km pipeline constructed in BC, from Dawson Creek to Kitimat. The section from Houston to Kitimat was widely considered the most technical segment of ‘the most challenging pipeline that has ever been completed in North America’. Alpine Solutions provided avalanche risk management for this segment from 2018 to 2024, and mountain/river safety (site access and rescue services) from 2022 to 2024.

Challenges

  • High hazard work environment such as road on mountain flank, avalanche terrain, heavy equipment lifting and rock fall.
  • Remote location.
  • Limited resources.
  • High hazard work such as confined space welding.

Solutions

  • Perform rescue exercise practice on a weekly basis to ensure readiness for several potential scenarios.
  • Work in pair with paramedic and helicopter pilot.
  • Put in place ‘rig for rescue’ system for confined space work and fall arrest/fall restraint system for work at height.
  • Be on standby at specific location during high hazard work.
  • Perform risk assessment on a regular basis.
