Avalanche Hazard Index

Leaders in Avalanche Hazard Index (AHI) Analysis, and Visualization for Mitigation Planning

Avalanche Hazard Index has been used in for roads in the United States, New Zealand and Canada starting in 1970. The AHI is a numerical index for the expected damage and loss due to snow avalanches interacting with vehicles on a road within an avalanche area.

Using AHI to Visualize Avalanche Mitigation Efforts

Having completed some of the largest AHI studies in North America, we have developed an innovative tool for visualization that has now been developed for some of the largest avalanche mitigation programs in North America.

The AHI can be calculated without mitigations such as closures, control or structural defenses. We can introduce specific mitigation to a given avalanche area and calculate what is called residual AHI which is used to measure the effectiveness of closures, engineered protection and avalanche control.
